The Cincinnati Kid – why I Love this Movie

I was surfing the web for new movies which somehow depicted how card games affected the lives of people. Instead, I was affected by the movie, the Cincinnati Kid. In modern times, the most popular card games were shown in Casino Royale and the movie 21. But if you try to look at The Cincinnati Kid, then you would surely appreciate it. The movie is about a young man named Eric Stoner, played by Steve McQueen, who is a rising star in the world of poker . Every game he played, he won. However, his popularity was not enough for him so he decided to challenge a legendary poker player  named Lancey Howard which was then played by Edward Robinson. He wanted a high-stakes match with him so that if he wins, his name among the greats of poker would then be noticed. The movie setting was in New Orleans in the 30’s. Apart from that, The Kid had to deal with a lot of distractions including the wife of the shooter Melba, which was played by Ann-Margaret.

In the movie, I love how The Kid went about his business. He was a really good poker player, but I thought he was too ambitious. Nevertheless, I loved his ambition and how he strived to be known as a great poker player. Imagine how you would not idolize a great player who is aggressive yet sexy in the eyes of women. Surely I want a life like what he had in the movie. I badly want to become a famous player and at the same time be a need of a woman rather than a want. That is why I love this movie and that is why I love the character of The Kid. Hopefully I would become like him one day.

This is a little something about myself

Writing is my forte and in my blog I hope to write short stories all connected  with my life.

I belong to a family of musicians. My house reverberates with sounds of music. My father plays the guitar, my mother is good at the piano and my only loving sister does full justice to the key board. My little brother and I are good singers. I sing in the baritone range and my brother with his yet to develop voice assists me in creating melodies that are pleasing to the ear. Having a natural ear for music it is cake walk for us to produce the best music ever. My father owns a classy guitar and none of us can touch it. It is his precious possession. He spends endless hours maintaining it and tuning it. My sister's keyboard is loaded with background music and she only needs to play the solo. My mother has had some training by some excellent musicians and her rendering is par excellence. Together we make a perfect band of perfect music. We do have sessions in the evenings when all gather in the hall and have practice sessions. Our neighbours say they are fortunate to have us around.

My ambition is to compose songs. I have passed a few exams where I was taught to read music. My brother and I sing in the church choir where we have our friends who play the instruments. The other members of my family do not join us in the choir as they have other priorities.

We have no plans to commercialise our talent but are invited to play  at informal parties by friends and relatives. We do get accolades galore which is more than what we have bargained for. We are getting requests to play for formal 'do's which ofcourse will be on payment and about this we have yet to take a decision.

One of my friends owns a Casino both real and virtual. He has been approaching me to create some original tracks that he would like to have as background music specially for the poker sessions. I would like to work on this only  as a friendly gesture as my family is opposed to giving our talent a commercial touch. My father in particular has his own principles where he feels that music is Godly and there should be no money element while rendering our collections. It is quite odd that we have received this request from our friend and that too for a place that is  connected with making money  by gambling.  In order to create music we will have to first learn how poker is played. None of us in the family play cards. All of us therefore  will have to visit a Casino and get the hang of it. I only hope that we will not get to like the place and become frequent visitors there. Gambling is after all addictive and unless one has total control one can slip any time..
